Favorite Pastime

The mighty Tower of Power

The mighty Tower of Power from Oakland, California.
The 2009 lineup (from left, bottom row): Adolfo Acosta (trumpet), Mic Gillette (trumpet, trombone), Stephen MacKenzie "The Funky Doctor" Kupka (baritone saxophone), Tom E. Politzer (tenor and alto saxophone, flute), bandleader Emilio Castillo (2nd tenor saxophone). From left, top row: Larry Braggs (lead vocals), David Garibaldi (drums), Roger Smith (keyboards), Francis Rocco Prestia (bass guitar), Mark Harper (guitar).

Everyone has a favorite band. Mine is the legendary soul and funk band from Oakland, California, Tower of Power, one of the world's most enduring bands, formed in 1968 and still going strong in their 42nd year in 2009-2010! Fully half the band consists of original band members!

I've traveled over 30,000 miles to see 68 shows in 12 states, and I can't wait for the next opportunity to see a show. Their 29th CD, Great American Soulbook, was released a couple of years ago. Check it out for a funky good time!

Their world-renowned horn section has recorded on hundreds of albums and CDs, and the 1-2 knockout punch of drummer David Garibaldi and bassist Rocco Prestia truly embodies "Rhythm in the Reign" and defines the paradigm when it comes to the groove! Visit the band's Web site at: http://www.towerofpower.com.

I'm honored and delighted to be acquainted with the band members and to have had the opportunity to run half a dozen Web sites for current and former members of the band. I owe them a great debt of gratitude that I can never truly repay. This is a good and decent group of men that are top-drawer musicians.
